RECYCLING PLASTIC

2010 Eco Article
Last month we had a fantastic meeting of our Recycle Works! volunteer group. Finally, our city is promoting recycling for multi family residences; condos, co-ops, apartments, and townhomes. It has been mandatory for the multi family residences to recycle, but has not been enforced by the statutes. So now, we are working on getting all the multi building into recycling!!! Yipiee
Hey, check this out, this week at Costco, I found The Bottle Rug, it is 30x45 inches, very soft, it is made from 100 plastic bottles! They come in many colors, I bought the one called Green Tea, it is the color of sage; they are made in Scottsboro, AL . Made in the USA!!!!
You can wash it, and the very best thing about it is it we know that our recycling works!! Also, another best thing about it was the price, only $10.00!! If you get their coupon book, there is a $2.00 off coupon in there right now!
Now you can feel even better about all the recycling that you do, it does make a difference! And the next best thing to recycling that you can do, is to by the end product. I certainly hope to see more products like this in our stores soon.
Here's a new idea for summer, want to green your next volunteer vacation? Want to have a blast while helping the Earth? Here are some options:
GREEN VOLUNTEERS (greenvolunteers.com): Has an online guide that lists 500 “green” volunteer opportunies, such as coral reef restoration trips, park clean-ups and animal conservation projects.
GLOBAL VOLUNTEERS (globalvolunteers.org): Arranges a variety of trips, includeing water diversion/drainage projects and cleanups on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in Browning Mont.
THE AMERICAN HIKING SOCIETY (globalvolunteers.org): Provides programs for those who want to volunteer their vacation time to help restore trails in regions, such as Northern California, that have been damaged by storms and other disasters.
Green volunteer work projects send people to nature cleanups and preservation efforts all over the world. Participation in such efforts is up 13% over recent years. Travelocity, which helps pay for 12 selected volunteer vacations a year through its Travel for good program, is seeing twice the number of grant applications for green volunteer trips than before. The Ecology Project International's Yellowstone program for teens also is seeing a near doubling of participation by students, who take conservation work at the National Park.
Also, many local organizations offer teens summer credits for volunteer recycling and civic events. Think Global, act Local, or do both!
The US is 5% of the world's population yet produces 25% of the world's waste.
Enjoy your summer!
